Getting Your Lake Windcrest Home Ready for Fall
By Ellen Pool · August 13, 2026
Fall around here is more of a suggestion than a season. It'll be a hundred degrees well into September and then one morning in November you'll walk out for coffee and actually need a jacket. But there's a short list worth getting to now, before the holidays fill up the calendar and the first cold snap catches somebody off guard. This is the one I run around my own house.
The trees
The tree cover is half the reason we all live here. It's also why your gutters and roof valleys are worth a look before the leaves really start coming down. On a wooded lot, they pile up fast, and a clogged gutter is the kind of small thing that turns into a not-small thing after a hard rain. Twenty minutes now saves you a headache later.
The pool
If you've got a pool, your routine shifts as the water cools. You'll run the pump less, the chemistry behaves differently, and if you're the type who's done swimming by late October, it's easier to get ahead of that now than to fight algae in a pool nobody's looking at. A quick talk with whoever services it, or a little reading if you do it yourself, goes a long way.
The HVAC
Your system has been running hard since May. A basic service check now is cheap insurance, and it beats finding out something's off on the first cold night when you actually want the heat to work. New filter, quick once-over, done.
The freeze you're not thinking about
We don't get many hard freezes, but the one that shows up always surprises a few people. You don't need to do anything today. Just know where your main water shutoff is, keep a couple of faucet covers somewhere you can find them, and have a plan for the outdoor spigots. Future you will be glad.
The holiday list
The holidays sneak up every single year. The guest room, the spare bathroom, the handful of little fixes you've been meaning to get to before family sees the house. None of it is urgent, which is exactly why it's easy to keep pushing. Knocking out one thing a weekend between now and November makes December feel a lot calmer.
None of this is dramatic. It's just the stuff that's simple in September and annoying in December. Do a little now and you get to enjoy the good part of fall instead of catching up on the parts you skipped.
If you're thinking a little bigger picture, like whether this is the year to make a move, that same short list is where I'd start anyway. Either way, I'm always around. 281.636.5633.
